The Vermonsters of the Deerfield Valley
Eric Johnson

Eric Johnson’s professional relationship with the art world began

when he was hired as a landscaper at the Elaine Benson Gallery in

Bridgehampton, NY, in 1992. But his interest and enthusiasm in the

works being exhibited quickly led to Elaine Benson mentoring Eric in

his rise to being a curator. In 1993, Eric’s first independent turn

as curator opened in East Hampton and featured large outdoor

sculpture by 10 artists. Between 1992 and 2001, Artscapes, Eric’s

company, curated other shows and sculpture parks around the Hamptons

and featured artists including Arman, William King, Colin Webster

Watson, Nicole Bigar, and Peter Lipman-Wulf.

Eric also worked in the field of art shipping and moving and has

worked closely with John Alexander, April Gornik, and prestigious

galleries like Vered in East Hampton, and Wally Findlay and DC

Galleries in New York.

In 2005, Eric curated “Gateway to Sculpture” at The Fells in Newbury,

NH – a non-profit, 200-acre lakeside property listed on the National

Register of Historic Places. People eagerly attended to see the works

of Hans Van De Bovenkamp, Robert Cook, Wendy Lehman, Bill King, Eric

O’Leary, and many more. Sculptor Steve Zaluski and his band played at

the gala reception, which was attended by over 200 people and raised

thousands of dollars for The Fells and its continuing education program.

Eric’s early experiences of running his own landscaping company and

moving and installing artwork add to his sense of spatial relations

and the care and common sense required in art installation. The new

show, slated for summer of 2007 at The Fells, will prove to be his

greatest accomplishment yet. Artists who have already agreed to

participate include Arman, Audrey Flack, Monica Banks, William King,

Peter Lipman Wulf, Lawrence Nowlan, and more. Entitled “Go Figure,”

the show will display figurative work only – some for sale, and some

on loan.
